Endangered Species ..The Red Uakari
Red uakari - CACAJAO CALVUS

Description: Of all the New World monkeys, the uakaris have the shortest tails. They have a distinctive bright red face, with the forehead and upper part of the head hairless. The rest of the coat is reddish-brown, and the hands, feet, and ears are brown. Length of head and body two feet, tail an additional 6 in; weight about 11 lb.
Location: In the upper reaches of the Amazon in Brazil.
Habitat: Arboreal. Dense, flooded forests.
Behavior: The red uakari lives in large groups of 15 to 30 monkeys, with reports of up to 100. It is mainly active during the daylight hours, when it moves among the branches of trees in search of fruit, leaves, insects, and other small creatures. It moves nimbly, but does not make spectacular leaps. Also, it does not emit many sounds, and is otherwise a rather quiet animal. In fact, these monkeys can easily go unnoticed in the forest, and it is only their bright red face which draws attention to them. They spend almost all their lives in the treetops, and rarely descend to the ground, which is flooded for most of the year in their preferred habitat.
