The Toyger..a relitively new breed
Breed Profile(USA)
The Toyger is accepted by TICA as a preliminary new breed and a small groups of breeders are working on the ambitious breeding programme to prduce a cat which ressembles a little tiger. Despite some setbacks great progress has been made and today's Toygers are striking cats with a close lying rich orangy coats covered with black tiger stripes.
The breeding programme is led by Judy Sugden, the daughter of Jean Mill who founded the Bengal, and uses Bengals as foundation cats. The two breeds are cousins, sharing the rich colouration and Asian Leopard Cat (ALC) genes, however the need to selectively breed for certain features and characteristics in order to produce good Toygers means that the Toyger cannot be thought of as a new variety of Bengal. Just as the spotted tabby and classic tabby patterns of the Bengal breed are modified by the ALC genes to makes different patterns; leopard spotted and marbled, so is the mackerel tabby pattern altered to give unique tiger stripes. The close stripes can form a braided pattern where stipes cross or have a paler centre rather like a stretched out rosette. Toygers also have rings or stripes across their temples. All Toygers have the glitter in their fur that some Bengals have, catching the light like goldust sprinkled in the coat. Toyger type also takes inspiration from the tiger and breeders are selecting for a broad nose and muzzle, and small rounded ears.
The breed was first envisaged in the 1980s and a mating took place between a mackerel tabby with close stripes called Scrapmetal and a Bengal called Millwood Rumpled Spotskin. In 1993 a cat was imported from Kashmir called Jammu Blu whose excellent pattern was a good addition to the Toyger genepool, and in the same year the breed was granted registration only status with TICA. Acceptance as a preliminary new breed followed in 2000. The breeding of Toygers is not simple but their future looks rosy because of the great enthusiasm which they have generated.
