Plants and Greenery Toxic to Dogs

Many people are buying plants and greens to enhance their gardens. But be careful of plants and cut greens to which your dog may have access.

Although most decorations are not hazardous, it is important to know the ones that are:

Plant Name Azalea

Toxic Part All Parts

Major Effect Vomiting/diarrhea; excitement or depression

What to do? Call vet, 24 hr emergency clinic


Plant Name Amaryllis

Toxic Part Bulbs

Major Effect Vomiting/collapse/excitement followed by depression; respiratory distress; can be fatal, esp. in very young or very old animals.

What to do? Call vet, 24 hr emergency clinic


Plant Name Japanese Yew

Toxic Part all parts, esp. berries

Major Effect Incoordination, collapse, diarrhea, slow heart rate--acute heart failure; may be fatal

What to do? If dog is alert, induce vomiting AND call vet, 24 hr emergency clinic


Plant Name English Ivy:

Toxic Part stems, leaves

Major Effect Mild GI signs, if any (vomiting/diarrhea)

What to do? Symptomatic treatment: consult vet


Plant Name English Ivy:

Toxic Part fruits, berries

Major Effect Much more severe GI signs: salivation, intense thirst, followed by vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Ingestion of large quantities could potentially be fatal.

What to do? Call vet, 24 hr emergency clinic


Plant Name Mistletoe:

Toxic Part leaves & berries

Major Effect Mild signs, if any: increased pulse, respiration, and blood pressure (which is unlikely to be a problem except for very young or very old animals or those with heart or kidney disease)

What to do? Consult vet for at-risk animals or in cases where large quantities have been ingested.


Plant Name Poinsettias

Toxic Part stems, leaves, bracts (flowers)

Major Effect Mild GI signs, if any (vomiting/diarrhea)

What to do? Symptomatic treatment: consult vet


Plant Name Holly

Toxic Part stems, leaves, berries

Major Effect Mild GI signs, if any (vomiting/diarrhea)

What to do? Symptomatic treatment: consult vet


Plant Name Eucalyptus

Toxic Part stems, leaves

Major Effect Mild GI signs, if any (vomiting/diarrhea)

What to do? Symptomatic treatment: consult vet

There are other plants as we move from country to country It is a good idea to see if you can find information in your local library or talk to your vet about obtaining a list...If there are any vet viewers out there that can add to this list it would be helpful to our Readers...
