What bedding preferences do you have? I have come to conclude thick fleece is best for my pigs. What do others like?

Many of our piggies are kept in sun room at the back of the house and we use a combination of straw and Hay with a layer of kitty litter at the bottom ...I am thinking about using shredded paper (getting s shredder and recycling all our houshold paper) as a cheaper alternative what does everybody else think. _________________ Antipodi

I have used shredded paper. I used to collect it from the local primary school.

I use pine woodshavings. I have been using it for close to 20 years and have had no problem with it. It's soft underfoot and absorbent.
There has been a lot of hype over the last few years about how shavings are a health hazard to rodents… but I have never had a problem with it.
And as far as I can see… when I began breeding cavies 20 years ago, there was nothing available to use for bedding apart from wood shavings… it didn't hurt or kill my pets then, and it doesn't hurt or kill my pets now!! So why not use it?? It is inexpensive, readily obtainable, and my pets seem to prefer it!!
I layer newspaper, shavings, straw and lucerne hay every cleaning day and top up the straw as required and feed the lucerne everyday.

Dear AMay your approach is wonderful and I too believe woodshavings are good material (I think the problem is only with treated pine) and lots of hay and straw ....I have many elerly piggies in my family bunch now some reaching nearly seven years and they are happy and healthy ...I am sure that enviornment has alot to do with thier longivity.... _________________ Antipodi
