Bird flu Reply with quote
i heard this story on the local news last night about this head teacher of a secondary school, who want to shoot all the seagulls out of the sky because of bird flu Shocked the man must be nuts.(what did come across is that he dont like seagulls)being a seaside town, there are lots of them.
those birds mix with others.. whats he gonna do stand there 24/7 shooting at the sky.plus a stray bullet could kill a human being Rolling Eyes

anyway i thought id put this thread up so we could keep eachother informed about this unfortunate occurance.

the UK are saying they dont have it yet, but i reckon the government are keeping the lid on it to avoid panic.

do you have it inyour country and how is it affecting you ?

So far Australia is not affected although we have heard some asian countries near our borders have been affected ...but ..I guess the tyranny of distance...The good news is our scientists are very close to perfecting a vaccine ..so things may soon turn...You will alwas get the nutters that use excuses to kill some poor defencless animal ...We had an incident here where they were going to cull the fruit bats in a park ...all they did was shift them to another area and cause lots of community concern...

Keep us updated what happens your end and anybody else out there we would love to hear what might be happening in other parts of Europe, Russia , Midddle East, Asia and America

Its here ! although i reckon its been here and it just hasnt been spotted til now, i mean imagine all the birds that die that we dont know about in forests etc.

yeasterday in scotland a dead swan was found.
it was reported to RSPB who said it should be reported to DEFRA
it was reported to them, but No one came to get the bird until 14 hours later, by which time it had been pecked and picked at by other birds and animals.. the test to determine if its bird flu took a further 8 hours.
what a bunch of imcompetents in charge of such an important matter.

ive heard rumours already that idiots with guns are shooting them out of the sky. its gonna be open season for them ! Confused Rolling Eyes Sad

Sadly these things are starting to happen and its another reason why we shouldnt allow Guns to be carried by the ordinary public.
Again the Government has failed to do its job they are too busy being paranoid about Poor Muslims and forgetting about the real issues of peoples needs. The Government should be out there capturing a few swans and other birds and testing them .....they should also be doing it here....but then there are more important issues than the peoples welfare....

yes the swan was found in the coastal town of cellardyke, scotland.
14 more swans in the same area are being tested, 9 have tested Negative. so far.

theres a 10km surveilence zone curbed bird transport.

and a 3km protection zone for poultry to be kept indoors and tested.

the first swan they tested was, positive to having the dangerous strain of the H5N1 virus.

Here's some general information on the Avian Flue

Avian influenza(aka bird flu, avian flu) is caused by a type of influenza virus that is hosted by birds, but may infect several species of mammals. It was first identified in Italy in the early 1900s and is now known to exist worldwide. A strain of the H5N1-type of avian influenza virus that emerged in 1997 has been identified as the most likely source of a future influenza pandemic. -
http://www.thepoultrysite.com/avianflu/bird-flu-news.asp
--------------------

The site has some great quick reference info too on diagnoses (what to look for in birds - symptoms) and Poultry Vaccination as a strategy for controlling AI in commercial birds.

--------------------

I think some people consider this to be a lot of hype and job security for some CDC types. The fact is it's the "most likely candidate" at this moment for something really catastrophic. Animals and people have died (that should be enough for people to pay attention I'd hope) and being that it can be spread through migratory birds is really very alarming. It's my opinion that everyone should be paying attention to this one NOW so that there's hope for it being contained.

Sorry about all the LINKS below. There's so much good info out there --

---------------------

BBC has a nice Question and Answer:

"What would the consequences of a mass outbreak be?

Once the virus gained the ability to pass easily between humans the results could be catastrophic.

Worldwide, experts predict anything between two million and 50 million deaths.

However the mortality rate - which presently stands at around 50% of confirmed cases - could decline as it mutates, they say."

Another great Q&A from NPR

-------------------

Great article here-slightly optimistic angle based on recent findings...

Studies Spot Obstacle to Human Transmission of Bird Flu:
http://www.forbes.com/lifestyle/health/feeds/hscout/2006/03/22/hscout531699.html

"But Siegel believes the virus would have to undergo a number of complex genetic mutations to move up the respiratory tract. "And even if it does, that's still not an assumption that it's going to cause a severe pandemic," he said."

my main concern is with the birds as we've been told threat to human life is not so much of a problem yet. as long as you dont handle birds or inhale their feases (poo).
what i see happening is there will be a free for all to go kill birds.
a lot of these birds would survive it, some may not have it but be shot dead. people panic, unfortunately.

poor birdies Sad

still the authories are not turning up to collect dead birds reported to them.
infact ive heard DEFRA dont even answer the phone.

Sounds like your all in the clear then because many more would be infected if there was virilant strain there ....It is apparently hard for the virus to mutate into a human virus though ....

the swan found to have the deadly H5N1 virus, was native to the uk so it must have caught it from a migrating bird. i think that this is not the last we've heard of this.

now they are saying that the swan was not a "home" bird and that it had migrated here. why cant these so called experts get it right.
and by the time they got to the bird , its head was missing, so where did that go ? did another bird or animal eat it ? are they now at risk.
so many questions and not enough answers Confused
