ALWAYS GET A 2ND OR MORE OPINION... Reply with quote
Pet owners I would like to tell you Barkers story.
My dog was bought for my daughter, who feared them through being attacked, he cured her also my mum of dog phobia.
anyway when he was 4 his testicles hadnt dropped, we were advised to op on him, taking them out of his stomache. we were short of money and kept putting it off.one day when he was 5 we realized he wasnt well, took him to vet,the vet phoned us while Barker was still put out. he said your dog has cancer and i can put him to sleep now (Barker was on the op table at the time) my husband said but the kids havent said goodbye to him, please sew him up and we will bring him home. when we collected him we asked can anything be done for him, the vet said you could take him to the Queen mother vet hospital for animals in hertfordshire. so we did, the vet there said hold on theres nothing in these notes to suggest he has cancer, cancer is a solid lump, this describes asoft mass. so we left him there for 2 weeks. they found out that he had a paraprostatic cyst. he had a big operation costing our mortgage money, but we had our doggy back.
so the moral of this story is ALWAYS GET A 2ND OPINION in a case of life or death. I tell Barkers story when ever i can, so that more people are aware.
7 years on, after 7 years of life he wouldnt have had,if the vet put him down.
Barker is now approaching 13.
but im affraid he may not see 13, he has a primary brain tumor.
we agian took him to the Queen mother hospital, he stayed a week. they adviced not to operate. he also has mastcell tumors over his body, and our local vet was going to op on them, which would have been painful and pointless considering he has an inoperable brain tumor. so his been on steriods many months enabling him to carry out the rest of his days comfortably.
today he had his first seizure since august, we did not rush him to the vet, because it would be his last journey. we gave him time to recover,it took over 2 and half hours til he got to his feet, the longest time. now he is back again enjoying his life once more. the seizure that stops him geting to his feet will be the one that we'll take him to the vets for. That last journey.

time to update..Barker died 30th of June, he died choking on a frankfurter/hotdog, when searching fo answers i found a petition by a lady whose son had also died choking on one, apparently they are the biggest killer of kids in usa.
i also found out that Raw hide chews had killed a dog.
but what also happened on our journey was that 3 different vets had made the same mistake for the dose of phenobarbiton our dog was given. and that was not the first time this mistake had been made.
so now i say ALLWAYS GET A 2ND,3RD OR MORE OPINION IF YOUR NOT SURE ITS RIGHT. IT COULD SAVE YOUR DOGS LIFE !

Some very good advice here ..I might add there are many out there that will tell you how much they know about their animals ...always be wary ...especially when risks are involved...

another thing is we told our local vet he'd had a seizure, she wasnt to bothered, and decided to go ahead to op on the mastcells.
Now if she had done that op, Barker may have died on the table, because aparently brain tumor and anaesthetic do not mix and the amount would have to be worked out before hand, taking into consideration the tumor,
which she obviously wasnt. plus she said she would have to dig deep to remove the 5 mastcells causing much discomfort and pain. he would then have to recover, it couldhave taken a month of quality life away.
one day she would say only 2 of the lumps were mastcell (cancer) and other time she said they are all cancer.
Barker has quality of life cos his on the right med, all thanks to Dr Dan .
btw the queen mum hospital and Dr Dan were actually filmed when Barker was there. i have seen 3 progs so far, im hoping they caught Barker on camera in one of them.think there will be 10 progs in all.

yesterday i heard another amazing story, i had just put a thread up on another board about a 9 yr old girl who was in a coma, and the hospital turned the machine off, sayin there was no hope for her. well they were wrong, she woke up 3 weeks after they turned the machine off. i think that machine was turned off too early, she could have died and no one would have known any the better. this must go on more than we know, and get swept under the carpet.

anyway a freind of mine told me that her little girls hamster died, her little girl didnt want to bury it til the next day. good job they didnt do it that day because it was alive the next day.

so the moral is never rush at a thing , give it time to recover just in case.

thanks nellie, but i shoud have amended this thread Embarassed
i have more to add. i say get a 2nd opinion well im changing that to even a 3rd.
because towards his last days, he went on phinobarbitone we were told a dose, which was too strong. we stopped the tabs. the vet said we done the right thing. but then he had to go on them again. we were again told a dose, the same dose by 3 differnt vets, they were all wrong Shocked the dose he needed for his wieght was half that he'd been prescribed.

so allways get a 3rd opinion or even more if you are unsure its right

Yeah, we have to do it for the sake of our dear pets who are suffering from this horrific illness. A different opinion varies so we can make the best decision

thats right, i mean we gave him the dose first time round , he couldnt even stand up, now that cant be right. we thought.

we do seem to be the best judge sometimes, and i have very little confidence in vets.
