Spamming ..Update Tips and Ideas

Did you know that the reason people continue to spam and find it profitable is because less than 1% of the people that receive or view spam actually do business with these often shady characters? (Yep! There are folks who aren't too bright, and spammers just play the numbers until they find someone who will respond to them, or at least become curious! Mad ). Some are even involved in criminal spam rings and the schemes they come up with to dupe people out of their money is endless!! There's even a Top 10 listing for these creeps! Shocked

99,999 Innocent Bystanders Spammed
by Suzanne Ross (Microsoft.com website)
http://research.microsoft.com/displayArticle.aspx?id=672

Did you know that over 95% of spam offers are SCAMS Question

I just HAD to nerd on Spam (Nerding is what we do! Confused )

SPAM - DEFINITIONS
Below is a definition from MAPS:
http://www.mail-abuse.com/spam_def.html

The Crabby Office Lady, a columnist on the Microsoft website, has several definitions that I thought were totally accurate:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010701261033.aspx

Quote:
What is spam?
No one I talked to is really sure what the letters in "spam" stand for:
spam: Stupid Pointless Annoying Mail?
spam: Stymieing Practice of Altering Minds?
spam: Scrambled Pieces of Asinine Marketing?

And here's a definition from abuse.net!
http://spam.abuse.net/overview/whatisspam.shtml

They also have a great outline regarding Spam:
http://spam.abuse.net/overview/

and FAQs...
http://spam.abuse.net/faq/

TIPS
From what I've read, here are some tips (which everyone seems to be doing anyway! Smile ):

1. NEVER RESPOND TO SPAMMERS!
NEVER waste time responding to spammers! Often these are just "bots" and not real humans. The ones that ARE human already know that what they are doing is wrong, and some are criminals! They're just "playing the numbers" looking for someone to click a link, surf their website or give them money! Clicking ANY of their links rewards them -- and possibly jeopardizes the security of your computer, since much of this junk is sent from infected computers!

Quote:
The personal things you can do about spam include never responding to it

http://spam.abuse.net/bits/makeadifference.shtml

2. POST OVER SPAM
One of the best ways to discourage spamming is to ignore them & cover their ad by POSTING OVER it. They want FREE ADVERTISING -- and you rob them of this by "burying" their spam. POST OVER all spam with a simple message as many have already been doing! (AWESOME!!!):

POST WILL BE DELETED

Don't put anymore effort than that into spammers, unless they are especially offensive. In those instances, post over the offensive material and let me or the Mods know so we can "take out the trash" ASAP! Twisted Evil

3. NEVER CLICK ANY OF THEIR LINKS
Don't click any of the links you may see in their posts, text, profiles, signature lines -- ANYWHERE!! Did you know that some spam rings are known to send posts from INFECTED computers? Also, some links that may look familiar & "legit", are actually "spoofs" that will take you elsewhere if you click on them!

4. DON'T LET THESE CROOKS RUIN YOUR DAY!
Here's a link to some "Spam Humor"
http://spam.abuse.net/others/#Humour

The links include a Dr. Zeus-like poem called "Green Backs in Spam." Twisted Evil Laughing
http://spam.abuse.net/others/greenbacks.shtml

5. KEEP GETTIN' YOUR NERD ON!
Everyone is already doing this! Kudos to my nerd-mates!! One user on a site covered up a message, and wrote something like -- "OK I guess its my turn..." Think of this as swatting flies or playing badminton or even raquet ball!

A special thanx to my friend Vlad foir this wonderful article

I've had to change my email address, and soon learn that it's best to never sign up for sites using your main email address because it gets mixed up with your personal emails,

I have another specific email address that's for all those "sign up" and "fill out forms" and "petitions", so now all those emails don't get mixed up with my other personal emails. Very Happy

Basically you need at least two email addresses if you want to survive in the Internet jungle.

(1) Email address - for your family and friends

(2) Another Email Address - for "Signing Up to websites" and "Petitions" and "Newsletters" and "Whatever" - Get an Email account such as GMAIL. That will do fine. It becomes your messed up Email account Laughing

If anyone wants a "free" Email account please let me know, I can set you up with your own free "Gmail" account, they have spam tools to help filter out most of the spam Very Happy

good advice Greg, i wish i'd known it before, im not sure this will help me now.
i have 3 email addresses.
one mine, one hubby's for his work and one my mum.
and each time there is an important campaign i use all three , so all of us can vote and hopefully help the campaign succeed.

so ive used all 3 for petitions etc.
and now my hubby's one is recieving junk mail from stocks and shares sellers, i have tried return email but that fails and there is no 'unsubscribe' on them so i have no way of stopping them.
it started last year, then stopped, then started again a month later, they are all from different people but with the same message.

i get at least 5 a day, they are so annoying

You get five a day Shocked

That's not too bad considering...

My junk email account gets a whopping 3,000 SPAM emails a month Shocked Shocked Shocked

That's why its my junk (spam) email account! I don't read any emails in my Junk email account,,, because every month I login, select all, and hit delete, it's that simple. Razz Laughing

The great news is,,, no junk "Spam" gets to my other personal email accounts where my friends and families email's me Very Happy

I have another 4 email accounts and none of them gets spam Very Happy

All my free email accounts provide "Spam Filtering" settings can be set to either - Low, Med, or High, but that isn't good enough!! It's a total waste of time and effort, it's a sloppy way to control spam because it's not accurate, because some emails you want can get trashed!! Confused

The best method is "White List" that lists all the "Good" contacts. All you do is "Add friend to the White List" it's works similar to adding a friend to your address book. It's really easy to use.

The "White List" works extremely well. That way only the emails you want to read are from the "White List" (friendly list) sent to your inbox, the rest of the emails that are NOT in the "White List" is sent to the trash box. - The trash box automatically deletes all spam every once a month or you can manually go in there and "select all" then hit "delete" simple as that.

The "White List" never fails because it actually list the sender's email address and it's Email server ID

I use several email accounts, some are for my family, some for my friends and message boards such as CavySanctuary! I never get spam in those email accounts Very Happy

Then I have one other email account that is for "Junk" email "Spam" I may get 3000 or more Spams a month but I don't read them, I simply don't have to bother with spam anymore. And the best thing is, all the Spam gets deleted "Trashed" automatically every month Wink

Hi Jan

Sorry to hear that! It must be very frustrating and extremely annoying!!

One way to control that is to use a method called "White List" buy "Spam Control software" that uses "White Listing" because "White Lists" works best.

The other way is for your husband to deactivate his email account and reactivate a new one using a different name. (I've done this and best of all it's free) Wink

Hi Antipodi

That is really shocking!!! Mad

That would really upset me gettting crap like that!!

I'm glad you did the right thing by alerting your ISP, usually forward that creepy spam to your ISP, they can investigate it and hopefully catch those pathetic scammers!!

If I was you, I'd try to arrange for a new email account, ask your ISP to change your username for a new email account. Deactivate the troubled email account your using now!!

Remember! Spam can also be disguised as a very nasty virus!! So it would be in your best interest to deactivate that email account and start fresh with a another new email account. Wink

Hi Jan

In that case I'm not sure if it's done by his IP, if its at work using an Internet network of computers the boss or someone incharge may be able to arrange to have your husbands email account name changed. Something simple will be effective

Example:

If the current email address is: sten@work.com

Change it to: sten246@work.com

Hi Jan

Important questions:

Q: Does your husband depend on his email that is already known by customers? - if YES then you'll need to buy a really good "Anti-Spam" software.

Q: Would your husband be able to change his email without losing business? "if the answer is NO then you'll need to buy a really good "Anti-Spam" software.

Q: Does your husband have his own "Domain and Web Hosting"? most hosting ISP's provide more than one email. If that's the case then you could easily create a new email account. - If the answer is YES then you can contact your husband's ISP and ask them to assist you with creating a new email account. - If the answer is NO then you'll need to buy a really good "Anti-Spam" software.

Q: Have you tried calling the ISP where your husband's email account is? - then ask them to assist you with getting a new email address.

If your husband cannot get a new email account to use for his business then the only alternative is to buy a really good "Anti-Spam" software. This will filter out most of the Spam but not all.

thanks for that Greg. Smile

yes he can use another address.

i think to stop them completely we would need to remove the address affected, but then we will need another .

so if they get too much thats what we will have to do.

is deleting an email address easy ? is that down to the isp too ?

Yes! If I were you I would get another email address.

Make a phone call to the ISP and ask them

It appears that SPAMMERS have found another outlet to spawn their filthy rotten spurs Confused guess where?

Nice, peaceful and friendly message boards!!

In just a few weeks I've prevented-blocked 10 Spammers on the Stars of Wisdom message board and yet some of them tried to re-register, Confused Oh well!! Hahahaha they won't get past my tough security measures and I have their real IP's numbers, emails and location listed in the block-list Wink
