GYP

by Kilgore

I got the puppy when I was only five
I named his Gyp because my parents said he was sick
and may not stay alive

In the years to come
Gyp not only survived
but thrived

He was a mix between a Basset Hound
and a Beagle
With big floppy ears, a waddling walk
and more a deep throated bay or howl
than any bark

I use to take him on long walks
The Beagle in him always made him
want to chase after rabbits
Although, the Basset Hound side
made him rather slow

Gyp didn’t seem to mind that he never caught any rabbits
He would come waddling back to me
with his big flapping tongue dangling down
A look of mischievous joy in his eyes

Years went by
Gyp became by best pal
and would follow me
where ever I would go

One day my mother died
in a car accident
three miles from our home

I couldn’t talk to anyone
I could only cry
but, all that time Gyp
stayed by my side

He seemed to sense that something wasn’t right
Gyp would just lay beside me
occasionally lapping his big tongue across
my nose

As I grew into puberty
Gyp would no longer chase
after the rabbits on our walks
but seemed peacefully content
to watch them scamper away
as they sensed him near

One day when I was thirteen
I was crossing the road
Gyp toddled behind,
again a little slow

I saw the car swerve toward him
as I reached the sidewalk
Gyp wasn’t in the middle of the road
but was well toward my side

The car went out of the way
to hit him
And my poor beloved
Gyp had died

The kids in the car
were all in their early 20's
I heard one scream that’s 3 points
another said no only 2
That dumb dog
was way too slow

I saw only the face of the boy
who had screamed 3 points
and in a flash Gyp was dead
and the car was way far down the road

This was the day
I fully realized the incredible
cruelty of my fellow man

Years later when I had graduated college
I noticed an item in the paper about the new CEO
of a local firm in our area

The picture of the man
was an older version of that boy
who had yelled 3 points
those many of years ago

Previously, I had even considered applying
to this local firm
Now, I just wondered to myself
was torturing and killing defensless little animals
a steeping stone to becoming a CEO

I shook my head
and thought:
What a sad little world
