we are closer than ever to ending this cruelty, we have Sir Paul Mc Cartney on our side, he and his wife will be visiting the seal nursery on the 2nd and 3rd march, just days before the slaughter. and he has refused to sing in that country. Paul and heather are asking for donations,

WoW! Js I love the way you are on the watch for the things going on out there that is detremental to our beautiful animal diversity and i hope all our members read this request and do what they can ..I will get more into this as well as i think it is important we let the authorities particulalr in our local ares know what they are not or should be doing to help our animals...
I have also circulated this thread info to a number of other boards to hopefully get more people to help as this really needs our support..

its so nice to come to a place where i am understood. 2 boards i have been on havent given me this understanding. only one board is caring enough , im a mod on that one.
thankyou for spreading the word, with any luck we will abolish this cruelty.
as long as it ends in my life time, i am doing my best to see that it does.

SOMEWHERE IN THE GULF OF ST. LAWRENCE (CP) - Music legend Paul McCartney and his wife Heather travelled by helicopter to the barren ice floes in the Gulf of St. Lawrence on Thursday to stage a high-profile protest against Canada's annual seal hunt.
The megastar couple called on Prime Minister Stephen Harper to end the centuries-old commercial hunt, which they described as a brutal slaughter.
"Previous Canadian governments have allowed this heartbreaking hunt to continue despite the fact that the majority of its citizens . . . are opposed to it," the McCartneys said in a joint statement released before they left the airport in Charlottetown.
"We have complete faith that Prime Minister Harper will take swift and decisive action to end the slaughter of these defenceless seal pups for good."
The federal Fisheries Department has insisted Canadians support Ottawa's policies, citing a February 2005 Ipsos-Reid poll that concluded 60 per cent of those surveyed were in favour of a "responsible hunt."
Under partly cloudy skies and temperatures hovering around -10 C, the McCartneys flew by small plane from Charlottetown to Iles-de-la-Madeleine, 160 kilometres northwest of P.E.I., arriving at 1 p.m. local time.
Dressed in bright orange survival suits, they waved to reporters as they boarded a helicopter at the airport near Havre-aux-Maisons. It took them to a large ice pan about 20 kilometres northwest of the islands.
The McCartneys planned to get as close as they could to newborn harp seals - with scores of photographers and reporters taken to the event by three other choppers.
The longtime animal rights activists noted the Canadian government had approved a three-year management plan in 2003 that set the total quota for harp seals at 975,000 - a move that prompted renewed outrage among conservation groups.
Thursday's protest was organized by the Humane Society of the United States and the British-based group, Respect for Animals.
"I've observed the seal hunt at close range for seven years," Rebecca Aldworth, director of Canadian wildlife issues for the Humane Society of the United States, said in a statement.
"I routinely witness conscious seals dragged across the ice with boat hooks, wounded seals left to choke on their own blood, and seals being skinned alive. The commercial seal hunt is inherently cruel. It is a national disgrace."
The McCartneys cited a 2001 independent veterinarian report that concluded close to half of the seals killed were likely still conscious when skinned.
The Fisheries Department says it has an independent report that suggests otherwise.
"Sometimes a seal may appear to be moving after it has been killed; however seals have a swimming reflex that is active - even after death," the department says on its website.
"This reflex gives the false impression that the animal is still alive when it is clearly dead."
The youngest harp seals, known as whitecoats, cannot be killed until they loose their white fur. That can happen in as little as 12 days. But most of the harp seals taken are about 25 days old, the Fisheries Department says.
The date for the start of this year's hunt has yet to be set, though it usually starts in late March. The 2006 quota is also under review.

i wrote to Paul over a year ago asking for his help.
he did not reply to me , he did some thing far much better, he leads the fight to save these seals. what a leader, we couldnt have wished for a better one. i believe this is the seals best hope yet.

I am from Canada. I find your subject heading disgusting! It is not a SLAUGHTER. It's a seal HUNT. I'm not condoning the practice of it. I can't stand to see how people twist words around. Please change the subject line on your post. Not everyone in Canada goes to hunt seals like your subject line suggests.
Where do think a lot of those skins go to??? They go ABROAD! You can't tell me that other countries aren't involved in this as well. Have you looked to see who else takes part? Have you emailed them? Have you emailed their embassies? Have you done even ONE THIRD the work to smear them like you have the country I call home????? I don't care if Canada does host it or not. It wouldn't happen if the other countries involved didn't participate.

hi, the word slaughter is the correct word according to my dictionary(Oxford Englsh). I am not saying every one goes or that everyone agrees with it. i know canadians from other boards who are disgusted with the slaughter/hunt too. I know where some of those skins go and the UK is guilty of importing them too, that is why ive been emailing my government. if you put a thread up against my country for something you believe to be wrong i would respect your opinions.ok i may dissagree with you but i wouldnt ask you to change your heading unless it was breaking board rules. i feel i must point out that these seals are sitting ducks and cannot get away, they cant run so they have no chance, so that does not describe a hunt. yes ive emailed other embassies,shops,restraurants and fashion houses. i have been campaigning now for more than 3 years and my son did before me. i have not smeared your country the government has done that for you by allowing this horrific practice to continue. i am not doing this on a personal level, its not directed at anyone person. All im trying to do is end this cruelty as we have in most part here in the UK with fox hunting.

Slaughter is still the wrong word and I'm still disgusted by it. Everyone is allowed an opinion I'm not questioning that. I just feel that THAT word is wrong. It was put in place as a bias by everyone who feels that the hunt is wrong.

Sadly Fishmaster you seem to be running the wrong track here ...As an Animal conservationist I do not condone this action in ANY country ....MY country Australia conducted a SLAUGHTER of the Tasmanian Tiger literally massacering it out of existance and so I am 100% behind the campaign...and i am finding MANY others from different countries including Canada stricktly against this...For goodness sake EVEN Paul MacCartney felt strongly enough to fly over the place in protest and he would have acces to all the facts ....As responsible citezens of the WORLD we must stop this terrible act where ever it is and what ever country even if it is our own...Please Understand this forum is for the Welfare of animals ...Killing baby seals by clubbing them to death is not an act of a decent person

there they list some famous fashion houses responsible for the demand of seal pelts, together with email addresses.
you can email them and tell them that they should stop buying the seal pelts . that you wouldnt buy fur. and that the seals are cruely killed.

the canadian government wont listen to anyone including their own people many of who do Not agree with the slaughter of seals and feel its antiquated.

Sadly it is only an apology about liability and a vicious lie that was spread by the Government (desperate actions) and not about the actual killing of the seals ...sadly it is a small step only..these people sound determined to commit this barbarity and not admit the terrible pain and suffering they (or allowed to happen)have caused..

A real example about how exploitation can ave a chain effect and Nature is now lashing back...Shows how denial of such a vile act has its consequences ....Maybe a few more workers who work in industries that do these things to nature what will eventually happen to them...These guyz are left with nothing ..for themselves or their families...
