Finally Spamsense in Australia

Hey Guyz look whats happening in Australia ..is any of this happening over where you live ..I hope so ..sounds like the Death Knell for Spammers ...I hope so ...I dontthink ANYBODY likes SPAM ...

Dob in a spammer today: web weapon allows users to take revenge

IT HAS become a morning ritual. Log on, read your email, then spend the first important minutes of your working day deleting the spam cluttering your inbox.

But the communications regulator is hoping to change all that. After a 12-month trial, the Australian Communications and Media Authority yesterday launched the SpamMatters reporting button, which simultaneously deletes electronic junk mail and reports it to the regulator.

The tool can be downloaded from the authority's website and Telstra is offering it free to its Telstra.com and BigPond email customers. The authority is lobbying other internet service providers to make the tool available for their email customers so they too will be able to dob in offenders.

The Spam Act came into force in April 2004 in an effort to stop people sending unsolicited emails. Since then the authority has written to about 600 companies reminding them of their obligations under the Spam Act, issued 10 formal warnings and doled out 13 fines.

Last month, a Perth businessman, who sent more than 56 million emails to people around the world, was found guilty of breaching the Spam Act. He is awaiting sentencing.

Penalties for contravention of the Spam Act can be as high as $220,000 a day for first-time offenders and up to $1.1 million a day for repeat offenders.

Profits can also be forfeited and compensation paid to victims. The authority's spam team manager, Bruce Matthews, said 99 per cent of spam reaching Australians was sent from overseas.

He said breaches reported by the SpamMatters tool would enable the authority to play a bigger role in catching the email culprits. "This will allow [the authority] to share information with overseas regulators," Mr Matthews said.

Just over 700 people downloaded the SpamMatters software during its 12-month trial. The authority is hoping the tool will be quickly embraced by internet service providers across the nation.

The authority says the tool will help it identify spam campaigns and fight spam-related crime such as "phishing" and "mule" scams. Phishing involves scammers employing emails to "fish" for passwords and financial information. A typical scam involves an email claiming to be from an internet user's bank, seeking confirmation of bank account details.

Mule scams involve conning people to work for fraudsters to collect financial information or even transfer money from one country to another. The scams take their name from drug mules.

The launch of the SpamMatters button is part of the regulator's five-part strategy to combat spam, which involves legislation, education of consumers and business, industry partnerships, technological solutions and international co-operation.

It won't be effective because Australian anti-spam laws has NO duristriction in other countries. Confused

If all countries adopt "Spamsense" then yes, it would may be effective. But the truth is, spammers are big business especially in the USA, those businesses pay taxes. So that's why spam is still flying around and since the USA "so called" opt-out law policies where implemented to curb spamming it has not done anything but increase spam, before on average people were getting 100's of spam monthly, nowadays people on average get 1,000's of spam monthly Confused

Spammers have become far more aggressive, using spy-bots and sneaky banner "free-gifts" adverts! This has massively increased spam. Also, because of ultra high technologies spammers use spy-search-bots that automatically search millions of potential "valid" email addresses. It is recommended your email address is something like this zx97ugj48h0tf89y5kekfj8h99@hotmail.com Confused hmm difficult to remember eh?

To conclude:
Simple! "All countries" world wide must beef up it's laws to prevent spamming! There must be very strict "INTERNATIONAL ANTI-SPAM LAWS" There must be a very high penalty for spammers (one million dollars first offence and jail for second offence) Spam emails (Unauthorized emails - emails sent without the receivers consent) The opt-out must be stricter, and no marketing company is allowed to sell your email to a third party! Strictly no trading (selling) of email addresses.

It's happened to me and millions of people. Anti-Spam tools are okay but not 100% effective. What annoys me is spammers know that people will never buy any products advertised by spam because people hate getting spam, so why do they bother spamming. It becomes harassment, intrusion akin to hackers getting into your email and it annoys me the governments allow spammers to operate. Spam should be highly illegal equal to hacking!!

call me a cynic but I suspect Governments are in the pockets of spammers ..just look at the figures we've already had over 1 Million on this site and imagine that not all of those dont like advertising and these are the reason ...its definately BIG business sadly at the expense of the majority they still make lotsa money and some advertisers actually think they are doing US a favour....

Not cynic at all, you're right! The government is making loads of money from them, taxes and licences, the spam industry is huge, they trade and sell information, it's basically a very agressive marketing plot Confused
