Depleted Fish in popular fishing areas
All over the world fishermen are saying their catches are down and it seems a lot of it is being caused by overfishing ...We are taking fish at an alarming rate and not allowing breathers for stocks to build up and some popular fish may become extinct if we dont start acting soon.
In Australia we are setting up marine parks where NO Fishing is allowed and the government is buying back fishing liscences for trawlers to take pressure of the huge catchs wiping out local stocks. I was pleased to see this article but saddened by the opposition who want to close their eyes to what is becomming a world wide crisis...

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 13 (AP) — Federal officials unveiled a proposal on Friday to double the size of no-fishing zones around the Channel Islands off Southern California to protect marine life.
About 20 percent of the waters surrounding five islands off Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties would be closed to harvesting under the plan. No-fishing zones would grow to 309 square miles, and an additional 12 square miles would be set aside as a marine conservation area.
The marine reserves would be established in deep water to complement shallower refuges that California created around the islands three years ago. The strategy seeks to protect a variety of species, including lobsters, rockfish and abalone.
“When you close areas, the data is clear that the fish and lobster are bigger and more abundant,” said Chris Mobley, superintendent of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary.
Joel Greenberg, chairman of the Southern California chapter of the Recreational Fishing Alliance, said he was not convinced. “I am highly skeptical about the effectiveness of marine reserves, but not unwilling to look at it and try some to see if they do what they’re purported to do,” Mr. Greenberg said. |
