Global Warming may cause Polar Bear Extinction

Polar Bear Meltdown?
This week the Bush administration proposed to list the polar bear as “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act.
The proposal resulted from a lawsuit settlement the Bush administration reached in February with Greenpeace and the Natural Resources Defense Council. In return for these groups dropping their effort to force the Bush administration to grant polar bears “threatened” status under the ESA, the administration agreed to commence a rulemaking to list the bears.
This doesn’t sound like much of a “deal” – and it’s not. Though the proposal doesn’t legally bind the Bush administration to list polar bears as threatened and the proposal will simmer for at least 12 months during which time the administration says it will seek more information and public comment, based on the fanfare accompanying the proposal’s roll-out, it seems the listing is all but final.
Now here’s the kicker: the U.S. government, the same one that wants to classify the polar bears as “threatened,” also sanctions the hunting of polar bears for trophies. In the proposal’s media release, the FWS stated in an unconcerned, matter-of-fact fashion that, “Some Native communities in arctic Canada also obtain significant financial benefits from allocating a portion of their overall subsistence quota to trophy hunters from the United States and other nations…”
The FWS says that the projected threat to the polar bears is the future loss of their sea-ice habitat. Polar bears spend most of their lives on sea ice and recent data appear to indicate, according to the FWS, that sea ice in the Arctic Ocean is decreasing. The FWS even mentioned predictions of an ice-free Arctic Ocean “within the foreseeable future.”
Sadly many still are in denial that Global Warming is happening and I have read many articles on this issue and the issue of many other animal and humans plight , yet this is not considered proof ... when will we ever learn and how many bautiful unique animals have to die out before we take action and forget the greed of take take take all the time without giving someting of significance back to this earth.. _________________ Antipodi

its a total disgrace
yes so put them on the endangered list, then what ? nothing !
endangered but still can be hunted !
i saw a programme a few weeks ago 'planet earth' i had to write and complain to the bbc about it.
firstly they watched a young male polar bear die
secondly they shot one as it was too near the film crew
they could have fed that bear, he had just made a long swim to reach food, cos us humans have in effect melted his ice with global warming,. he was so tired and unable to catch food.
they watched him die
the film crew were in a tiny wooden shack, a polar bear kept approaching the shack, they sould have had a perimeter alarm, allowing them time to fire warning shots to scare him away.
what is the point of makeing these films if they are going to either kill the animal or let it starve.
many people complained about the starving bear, but i got a feeling they havent realized the other one had been shot as you didnt actually see it happen.
i am still realing over this wildlife programme _________________ js
